SAN DIEGO >> Hardy surfers took advantage of big swells that reached as high as 15 feet in some parts of San Diego and other spots along the California coast.
San Diego lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma told City News Service that as many as 25 swimmers, body-boarders and surfers needed to be rescued Friday. The high surf also led to the daylong closure of Ocean Beach.?
The towering surf was expected to last through Saturday morning in Southern California and the Central Coast. The National Weather Service says swells caused by strong storm system in the central Pacific was expected to produce surf of up to 12 feet along the coast with sets up to 17 feet along some Central Coast areas.?
The service cautioned that the conditions could create dangerous rip currents, which can pull swimmers out to sea.?
