CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- The Durham School Services union approved the authorization of a strike Tuesday morning, but a spokesperson with Charleston County School District says they are not expecting any issues with their bus service.
Charleston County School District spokesperson Jason Sakran says the district is "not expecting any service interruptions of significant delays" following Tuesdays news. Durham School Services has provided the county with transportation since 2007.
Teamsters, the Durham School Services union, and Durham have three more bargaining sessions scheduled next week. A spokesperson for Durham says the sticking point is hourly pay for drivers.
The spokesperson says Durham has offered a pay raise, but the union says it is not enough.
According to a media release from Sakran, Charleston County School District is confident Durham will provide a backup plan in the event that things go south.
"If a strike is enacted, we expect Durham to develop a contingency plan that continues to provide qualified drivers who can safely transport our students," the statement read.
The release goes on to say the district has not been involved in the negotiation process, and they do not have first-hand knowledge about what the two sides are discussing.

I am worried that people will regard the fact that the debt ceiling should be raised as something that economists are really disagreeing about, and where partisan allegiances are driving analysis. This is really not the case. ?During the last debt ceiling debate I put together a variety of quotes from reputable conservative economists to show this, and I thought it might be worth bringing them out again. So here goes:
Gary Becker: ?That Congress will have to raise the debt limit this summer is a no-brainer since revenues are not anywhere near large enough to cover government spending. Without a boost in the ceiling, the federal government will be unable to pay its bills, including pay to federal employees.?
Keith Hennessey: ?Congress must raise the debt limit. Not doing so would eventually lead to defaulting on Treasury bonds, a potentially catastrophic event.?
Douglas Holtz-Eakin? ? ?Yes, Congress should raise the debt limit. Being a good steward of the U.S. credit rating means that it has to pay Obama?s credit-card bill. And it should do so as quickly as possible ? on the day it returns from recess.?
And here is a video of Holtz-Eakin explaining this:
Glenn Hubbard: ?The debt ceiling must be raised ? not doing so is irresponsible.?
Richard Posner: ?No doubt before the political and economic damage becomes too severe, the Republican radicals in the House of Representatives will relent and the ceiling on borrowing will be raised. Before that happens interest rates may rise, and stay higher, because of doubts about the basic competence of American government. Those doubts, plus the higher interest rates they engender, may deepen the current economic downturn, which in turn will reduce tax collections, increase transfer payments, and in both respects increase the federal deficit??Why Republicans prefer flirting with failing to raise the debt ceiling by the August 2 deadline to accepting the deal tentatively worked out between President Obama and Speaker Bohner?is a deep mystery.?
In any case, if you think that only liberal economists believe going over the debt ceiling is dangerous and potentially cataclysmic you are mistaken. There very well may be reputable conservative or liberal economists somewhere who think going over the debt ceiling and then defaulting on our debt isn?t a big deal. If they exist I think it is safe to conjecture they would be in the vast minority. This is not a partisan issue among economists, but one where a truly radical idea has gotten traction among individuals who are not paying close enough attention to what their own sides? economists are saying.

Detroit isn?t your typical winter destination ? but you could find it difficult to get a flight into the Motor City or line up a hotel room anywhere near downtown in the coming days.? As many as 10,000 journalists and automotive media are expected to flood into the city for the annual Detroit Motor Show.
More formally known as the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the annual gathering is considered one of the industry?s most important and closely watched event, and for good reason. According to sponsors, as many as 60 new cars, trucks, concepts and crossovers will be revealed in the coming days while many of the industry?s top executives subject themselves to a media grilling that could reveal automotive trends and strategies for the rest of the decade.
?The market is more competitive than ever and this is a show that will give us a good look at how the industry is changing,? explains Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Automobile Dealers Association, the show?s organizer.?
The Detroit Bureau:?Nissan Resonance Concept Reveals Next-Gen Murano Crossover
Ford, meanwhile, is rumored to be preparing a sneak peek at its next-generation F-Series truck, hoping to take a little steam out of the Silverado ?reveal.? While the second-largest of the domestic makers won?t confirm that speculation it does acknowledge plans to show off the MKC, a compact crossover that could be critical to the long-term viability of its Lincoln luxury brand. As one might expect, domestic makers will have plenty to show and tell during the NAIAS media days, starting with the much-anticipated unveiling of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette ? the C7 to insiders and aficionados ? on Sunday night.? Chevy will also provide the first public showing of its all-new Silverado pickup.?
Chrysler, meanwhile, has an assortment of products on tap, including an array of Jeeps, such as the replacement for the compact Compass and Patriot models, along with an update of the popular Grand Cherokee.?
The Detroit Bureau:?Hyundai's HCD-14 Show Car is a "Hint" of Next Genesis Luxury Sedan
The fact that it?s tweaking the bigger Jeep flagship underscores one of the significant trends reshaping the automotive market.? In decades past, makers might have gone anywhere from five to eight years before making major changes to the typical model.? Competition is so fierce, stress industry analysts, that even a strong-selling product like the Grand Cherokee has to have frequent updates.
And while design changes are still eye-catchers, more and more of what makers talk about at a car show like Detroit focuses on technology.? Indeed, some of the most significant news the industry will make this month won?t be announced in Detroit but, rather, in Las Vegas, at the Consumer Electronics Show, where more than a dozen carmakers showed off their latest in infotainment systems and even a few prototypes of autonomous vehicles that can drive largely on their own.
?Our focus is to enhance the driving experience? with technology that can also improve safety, explained Julius Marchwicki, a senior manager on Ford?s Sync infotainment system.
While Detroit?s Cobo Center may be less than a half mile from General Motors? Renaissance Center headquarters, NAIAS organizers have worked hard to ensure it remains a truly global car show since it adopted the ?International? designation two decades ago.?
The Detroit Bureau:?Leaked Renderings Offer Sneak Peek at New C7 Corvette
In fact, the most significant debut that year was the launch of two new Japanese luxury brands, Toyota?s Lexus and Nissan?s Infiniti. And both will be back and hoping to make major news this year, as well.? The former marque will reveal its redesigned entry-lux sedan, the 2014 Lexus IS, and Infiniti will not only roll out the replacement for its G-Series sedan but introduce buyers to an all-new alphanumeric naming strategy, the 2014 model to be known as the new G50.
Industry watchers contend that major car shows like Detroit?s have a direct impact on potential buyers, near and far.? And with the U.S. auto industry finally recovering after the worst depression it has suffered in more than half a century, a blitz of new product could deliver some welcome momentum, according to Joe Phillippi, of AutoTrends Consulting.
Of course, that?s something that auto shows have aimed to deliver since the first one was held in New York City more than a century ago.? Back then, show-goers were given a variety of powertrain options , about a third of the vehicles on display driven by steam, a third by batteries and the rest by gasoline. The abundance of petroleum eventually led gas power dominate but as the 2013 NAIAS will make clear, things are up in the air again.
There?ll be plenty of alternative models making their debut, including the Cadillac ELR, a luxury spin-off of the more mainstream Chevrolet Volt plug-in.? Nissan, meanwhile, plans to pull the covers off its Resonance Concept, a hybrid-powered crossover.
The Resonance reveals another significant trend one can spot at Detroit?s Cobo Center next week.? Since the legendary General Motors design chief Harley Earl crafted the Buick Y-Job ? generally considered the first true show car ? in 1938, concept vehicles have become an essential part of the auto show allure.
Long-time showgoers will likely recall some of the wild and wacky concept vehicles of the past, which former Ford design director Jack Telnack liked to call ?fantasies in chrome.?
These days, however, the fantasies have been toned down and it?s become much more a case of ?what you see is what you get.?? Even though competition is tougher than ever, automakers are more likely to use concept vehicles as a way to signal what?s really coming ? and gauge public reaction.
The Nissan Resonance, for one, will reappear with relatively minor changes, in 2014 as the next-generation Murano CUV.
One of the challenges for organizers of major auto shows, like the NAIAS, is to keep them relevant. Detroit?s event now includes a special, limited-access gathering called the Gallery, where some of the most exclusive products, like the new Bentley Continental GT Speed, are put on display.
The 1-day gala is limited to AmEx Centurion ? or ?black card? ? and Platinum customers and a select group of other invitees, ?folks who can readily afford to buy anything on display,? according to the DADA?s Ash Caza.
One other significant addition to the Detroit show will return for 2013, giving show-goers the opportunity to test drive the latest battery cars and plug-in hybrids. But considering the extreme weather possible for mid-January in Detroit, organizers have found a novel way to sidestep the worst Mother Nature might deliver, running the test drives in the massive basement of Cobo Center.

To paraphrase Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech football fans are a dangerous crowd these days. Steamed by a 7-6 season and impatient with the offensive coordinator search, they barked again Friday when the ACC released conference opponents for 2013.
The objects of their ire: return trips to Boston College and Miami, a repeat visit from Duke and a lost game at Florida State.
At the risk of further provoking the faithful, some explanations.
First, the time crunch can not be overstated. In February 2012, in response to the Syracuse-Pittsburgh expansion that grew the ACC to 14 schools, conference athletic directors bumped the league schedule from eight to nine games.
But in early October, weeks after agreeing to a football partnership with Notre Dame, the athletic directors reversed course and pared the conference schedule back to eight games. Eight months of work on a nine-game rotation torched, schedule-makers began anew.
Then there's the balance requirement. Each team's six division games must include three home and three road dates. The two crossover games are one home and one away.
Moreover, in odd-numbered years, the Atlantic Division hosts all primary crossover games, with the Coastal hosting in even-numbered years. That permits the fluid rotation of non-primary crossovers that athletic directors requested.
Combine the equity component with expansion, and conflicts were inevitable. Some 2013 games had to be played at the same site as in 2012.
The same happened in 2005 and '06, the ACC's inaugural seasons with 12 members and two divisions. Virginia Tech hosted Georgia Tech both years. Also, Wake Forest traveled to Florida State, North Carolina to Miami, and Clemson to Wake Forest in those same seasons.
The Hokies are especially affected in 2013 because of the non-conference game they played in 2012 at Pittsburgh, now a Coastal Division rival. Under the previous ACC rotation, Virginia Tech was to host Miami, North Carolina, Boston College and Maryland. Add the return game from Pitt, and you have five home conference dates.
After consulting with coaches and athletic directors, the league office's solution was to send Virginia Tech back to Miami and Boston College in 2013, while returning Duke to Blacksburg. Yes, it creates what many fans consider a bland home schedule of Duke, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Western Carolina and Marshall. But the ACC isn't responsible for the Hokies' non-conference opponents, and dismissing the Tar Heels and Panthers as unattractive games seems rather short-sighted.
If not for NCAA sanctions, Carolina would be the defending Coastal champion, and under first-year coach Larry Fedora, the Tar Heels were among the league's most entertaining squads. Pitt rolled Tech this past season and, dating to both programs' Big East days, has won four straight in the series.
Regardless of venue, Miami will be a stern test because of the talent Al Golden is assembling. But dismal support leaves the Hurricanes with minimal home-field advantage. In short, playing at Miami in consecutive years beats playing at Carolina back-to-back.
The Hokies' return to Boston College in 2013 is necessary because, as previously mentioned, the Atlantic hosts all primary crossovers in odd-numbered seasons. That's also why Georgia Tech plays again at Clemson in '13, and Duke returns to Wake Forest.
Previously, Virginia Tech also was scheduled to face Florida State on the road next season. But with rotation crossover games cut from two to one by expansion, the Hokies were going to lose a 2013 date with either the Seminoles or Maryland.
The Terps may not jazz fans, but that game is far more winnable than playing in Tallahassee, where Tech will have appeared only once in its first 10 years of ACC membership. Indeed, the Maryland-instead-of-Florida State bargain could be the difference between the Hokies winning the Coastal and not.
Two other points: First, the Seminoles are already playing Miami at home next season, and under the new format, you can't play two teams from the opposite division at home, or away, in the same year.
Second, in the old rotation, Miami played at Virginia Tech and Florida State every other year. That's brutal, and the new format splits those games to where the Hurricanes travel to Blacksburg or Tallahassee every season.
Contrary to the Hokies, Virginia's 2013 schedule adjustment was blissfully simply. As they would have pre-expansion, the Cavaliers get Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Duke and Clemson at home, with Miami, North Carolina and Maryland on the road.
The lone change: Virginia plays at Pitt instead of Wake Forest.
If you think this schedule-making is easy, by the way, consider the Southeastern Conference, which this season grew to 14 teams. While Alabama played four of its six West Division games at home, newcomer Texas A&M played four of its six on the road.
For 2013, the SEC adopted a "bridge" schedule not based on past or future rotations. Three games ? Ole Miss at Alabama, Texas A&M at Ole Miss and Georgia at Auburn ? will be repeats from 2012.
Gazing ahead, the ACC format appears equitable and easy to follow. The hiccups are few and, rather than lingering for multiple years, occur only in 2013.
Let's just hope there's no realignment to louse it up.

Malibu has always been known for its hidden beaches and un-hidden wealth. The combination has now turned Malibu into one of the nation's capitals of hyper-priced real estate.
Malibu had the most $10 million listings in the 12 months ending in November, according to Coldwell Banker. With a huge boom in sales in the fourth quarter, fueled in part by the fiscal cliff, Malibu is in the running to have the highest sales total in the $10-million-plus category for all of 2012.
There were reportedly 11 sales of $10 million homes in Malibu last year, up from eight in 2011.
Related:What It Would Cost to Own Downton Abbey
That includes closings on at least $123 million worth of high-priced property in five different deals in the fourth quarter alone. There were three closings of $5 million or more at the very last minute, on Dec. 31.
And 2013 is off to a huge start.
A Russian billionaire couple has just paid $75 million to buy Howard Marks's 9.5-acre estate. That's a Malibu record.
The Pacific Coast Highway property includes a 20,000-square-foot house with eight bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, two guesthouses, a separate gym, tennis courts and a swimming pool.
The all-cash deal was off-market, with a reported original asking price of $125 million.
Marks, chairman of Oaktree Capital, and his wife, Nancy, paid $31 million for the property in 2002, when he bought it from the estate of late?Herbalife?founder Mark Hughes.
As for 2012,?Oracle?CEO Larry Ellison was one of the biggest buyers in Malibu, adding two more properties to his holdings along Carbon Beach. He bought former?Yahoo?CEO Terry Semel's estate in September for $36.9 million and Jerry Bruckheimer's home for an undisclosed amount.
Ellison now owns about a dozen properties in the area known as Billionaire's Beach, including famed Japanese restaurant Nobu, and a property he's developing into a botanical gardens and art museum.
Other famous residents of Billionaire's Beach include entertainment mogul David Geffen and former Dodgers CEO Jamie McCourt.

The last major closing of 2012 happened with just three days left in the year. A property on Sea Lane Drive in Paradise Cove Bluffs went for $36.5 million, a $19.5 million discount to the original asking price.
That 11,313 square-foot home sits behind a 12-foot wall on 6.6 acres of beachfront property. It has a theater, two offices, a private beach, guest house and lighted tennis court.
If you want to move into the neighborhood, there are currently plenty of $10 million offerings in Malibu. The most expensive may be the Rosenthal Estate on Newton Canyon Road, listed at $59.5 million.
It includes a 235-acre vineyard, a 12,000 square foot hacienda-style main house with 8 bedrooms, two pools, a gym, two guest houses, a wine tasting room and a 6-car garage.

Dacor's ninth-generation oven pulls together a 1GHz processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM and Android 4.0.3. It also cooks food. At the front of the Discovery Wall Oven, there's a 7-inch LCD touch panel, while the UI behind its oven-centric widgets is apparently the product of a design collaboration between Dacor and BMW's DesigworksUSA -- they're all simple enough to navigate and get things done. The oven-maker's Discovery IQ controller cooking app will offer up interactive cooking guides, recipes and all other things cooking, although you'll still be able to install more standard apps from Google Play. The built-in cooking app offers preprogrammed dishes and adjustable timings for several dishes, while you can even program the oven to cook food remotely from any Android device.
You'll also get notifications (text message or on-screen) through your other Android device when your meal is done. An iOS version of the app will be ready to launch alongside the oven sometime this summer, with the double unit priced at a wallet-trembling $7,499 and the single oven at $4,499 -- so there's the price for convenience. It'll arrive in three different finishes, but sounds like it should go well with our other digital white goods and digital cutlery. We've got our hands-on video uploading at the moment, but take a look at our gallery for a closer look.

A space telescope has peered through dense dust and gas to produce the first images of the high-energy cosmos. These reveal two blazing black holes and a supernova remnant (see pictures, right).
The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, was launched into Earth orbit on 13 June. It can detect X-ray radiation at energies between 6 and 79 kilo electronvolts, well above the range of NASA's other orbiting telescopes, such as Chandra. Such high-energy radiation can penetrate gas and dust, so NuSTAR sees through the galactic debris that blinds other telescopes.
On 7 January, Fiona Harrison of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, released the telescope's first images at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Long Beach, California.
One image (see picture, right) is of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A, which is about 11,000 light years from us. It shows never-seen-before high-energy X-rays emitted from extremely hot regions and from particles accelerated to within a fraction of the speed of light by the supernova's shock wave.
NuSTAR also maps the emission of X-rays from the decay of radioactive elements such as titanium-44 in supernova remnants, which can tell us more about the exploding star that formed Cassiopeia A. "The distribution of this material is very sensitive to how the core of the star explodes," Harrison says. "Is it a spherical explosion, is it lopsided, or is it asymmetric?"
She also released NuSTAR images of two astonishingly bright, ultra-luminous black holes (visible as magenta blobs in second image). They were caught spewing out X-rays in the outskirts of spiral galaxy IC 342, which lies 7 million light years away in the Camelopardalis constellation.
These are unlikely to be supermassive black holes, which are also luminous but are found near the centres of galaxies. Instead, they could be intermediate-size black holes a few thousand times the mass of our sun, or black holes that are guzzling matter from a companion star.
"These images have a combination of crispness and sensitivity that is orders of magnitude better than ever made before in this region of the electromagnetic spectrum," says Harrison.

Today is the Day to Challenge Yourself
It?s time to take control of your health. Adding traditional cultured foods and beverages into your diet can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your health. I know for me it is very important. I made a new year?s resolution to add more fermented foods and drinks to my diet and to learn how to make them at home. In particular, I am finally drinking kombucha and I hope the Challenge will help you do the same! I hope you join me in taking this giant step forward. Let?s share information, support and recipes!
We Are Too Clean and Have Lost Our ?old friends?
The beneficial bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses and even worms (read more about that here) that inhabit our intestines are our friends. They are supposed to live there, having evolved inside of us over hundreds of thousands of years. They do much for us and in return we give them home and hearth. These microscopic critters are our friends and as such must be treated with respect and generosity.
Over the course of the past hundred years, with urbanization, better sanitation, refrigeration and better living conditions, we have become more sterilized. Conventional attitudes have a firm belief in the germ theory and medicine quickly responds to the slightest sniffle with an antibiotic. We have done a good job in killing off potential pathogens, but also our beneficial bacteria as well.
Additionally, with the advent of refrigeration it was no longer necessary to ferment foods in order to preserve them. However, the symbiotic nature of our relationship with our microflora was not taken into account and most of us are depleted and out of balance, because we do not have the volume of beneficial bacteria we need.
For vibrant health we need to culture, nurture and revere our microbiome (bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses, helminthes).
Join the Kombucha Challenge!
Start to drink and learn how to make this amazing functional, living beverage a part of your life. You may start at any time and be at any level of competence. Beginners are welcome as well as the seasoned kombucha fan!
My goal with this challenge is to engage as many people as possible to the health benefits of fermented foods and kombucha in particular ? to teach them the simple skills that will develop their confidence to move forward in their health goals.
Make a goal
It?s all about kombucha! Start to drink a little at each meal as soon as possible. You don?t have to make it at home! You can start by buying it at your local health food store before you commit to making it at home. As with any probiotic food, start with just a little and work up the amount slowly in order to let your body become accustomed to the new food. This is a living food and some people will react to it, especially anyone with a known health problem. So don?t go and guzzle a full glass of kombucha on the first day unless you ordinarily do this!
I started several weeks ago to drink 1 ? 2 ounces with my meals. I already feel a difference in my digestion! My goal is to work up to 1/2 cup at each meal and some sips in between, as I found that it helps me control sugar cravings. That?s why I?m so excited about it! You can feel the benefits almost immediately!
I?ve tried several of the flavors and have a good idea about which ones I really like best. I can?t wait until my home brewed kombucha is ready and I can start experimenting at home!
If you are already drinking kombucha perhaps your goal can be to learn how to brew it at home. We will be going over that over the 4 week Challenge period.
If you are already home brewing perhaps your goal can be to switch to the continuous brewing method or to get some of your friends involved in this Kombucha Challenge because you know it is so healthy.
You may set one or more goals for the Challenge according to which level you would like to achieve. Please leave a comment stating your goal(s). When you publicly state your goals, you are more apt to follow through.
There is one mandatory action to be included in the Kombucha Challenge ? you MUST sign up for the Komucha Challenge newsletter below. This will keep us in direct communication with new information, links and coupon codes.
Level 1: Goal is to start drinking kombucha whether it is home brewed or store bought.

January 5-16 the PyeongChang Olympic area will host the international sports camp gathering young people from around the world to enjoy the winter wonderland
Dream Program 2013 is set to start on January 5 with 166 youths from 40 countries in PyeongChang, the host city of the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This annual winter sports camp provides winter sports experience such as skiing and skating and promotes exchange of culture and friendship among youths from all over the world. 13 nations send their youths to Dream Program for the first time, including East Timor, Vietnam, Uganda, Rwanda, and Papua New Guinea.
Dream Program, an initiative established in 2004 by Gangwon Province during PyeongChang?s bid for the Olympic Games to promote the values and ideals of the Olympic Movement and expand the base of winter sports globally, celebrates its 10th edition this year.
Up to now, the Dream Program has invited 1,083 young people from 50 different countries where winter sports are not enjoyed due to various reasons. Among the participants, total 46 athletes represented their own countries as national team members at international winter sports events, including the Olympic Winter Games.
The program has received praise from international sports community for promoting peace and harmony through sports, contributing to PyeongChang?s bid and also gotten support of national government authorities by raising awareness of Korea through the world.
For this year, Dream Program will introduce a session called ?Master Class? in which Olympic medalists or national team members of Korea like Sung Si-baek, a Korean short track speed skater and Olympic silver medalist, give one-on-one lessons. Also, to celebrate its ten-year anniversary, Snowshoe Marathon will be held in the Alpensia Cross-country Course, in which Dream Program participants will join to experience Korean traditional snowshoes and get together with Korean runners.

Leap Motion's been working hard to get its 3D gesture control technology in the hands of developers -- 12,000 thus far -- since it was first revealed back in May of 2012. Today marks a big step towards getting it into the hands of consumers, as the company has announced its first OEM partner, ASUS. The Taiwanese firm plans to put the technology into new high-end notebooks and premium All-in-One PCs packing Intel's Haswell silicon.
As a quick refresher for those unfamiliar with Leap, its tech has a 150-degree field of view that tracks individual hands and all 10 fingers at 290 frames per second to provide ultra precise motion controls. This news got you itchin' to ditch that old machine with its archaic touchpad or mouse interface in favor of a gesture-controlled ASUS? We can't tell you how much they'll cost, but ASUS promises the PC's will be available around the world later this year.

There are some rumors going around that Apple is considering the purchase of crowd-sourced mapping app Waze. Apple has a ton of cash, and can certainly buy Waze if that's what both parties want, the way Apple bought Chomp, Color, Polar Rose, Siri, and other companies over the years. Mike Butcher of TechCrunch writes:
So it comes as almost no surprise to us that there are rumours flying around that Apple is sniffing around Waze with a view to a possible acquisition. After all, Waze is already a data partner for Apple?s Maps app and was the only app to gain meaningful marketshare after the Apple Maps fail. We have reached out to both. An apple spokesperson said: ?We don?t comment on rumors or speculation.? We got a ?we never comment on rumors? from Waze.
Location is incredibly important. If Apple feels there's talent and/or technology at Waze that can help them with maps, then it makes sense they'd be exploring the possibility.
That's part of what makes this such a compelling rumor. Apple Maps have suffered in the media and in public perception since launch, and this taps into the general desire for a "quick fix" to the problem. However. Apple replacing iOS 6 Maps with a rebranded Waze app, is a non-starter. Even integrating specific features people like about Waze, such as super-fast crowd-sourced updates, would be non-trivial. Likewise, pumping raw Waze data into Apple's backend location services. Apple already has TomTom and Waze, and other data sources there. Turning all that data into a clean, verified, using facing maps product has been a problem. Would more data help or only exacerbate it?
After Apple bought Chomp, there were huge expectations that search and discovery in the iOS App Store would be instantly, magically improved. Instead, we've had slow, iterative, often painful changes that are still in progress. Waze likely wouldn't fix Maps any quicker or more easily than Chomp fixed the App Store.

The stock jumped to $28 at the close in New York. Today?s gain came after analysts at JPMorgan Chase & Co. increased their Facebook share-price target to $35, citing ?strong advertising trends.?
Facebook is benefiting from growing interest in new ad features that let companies target the more than 1 billion users on the service, many of them by way of wireless gadgets. Revenue tied to mobile advertising should surpass sales from similar spending on desktops in 2014, according to JPMorgan.
?We are incrementally positive on Facebook shares into 2013 as we believe it remains very early in the trajectory of Facebook?s mobile advertising,? the JPMorgan team, led by Doug Anmuth, wrote today in a note. ?Importantly, we believe marketers are also realizing that there is branding and awareness value in Facebook ads and that users don?t necessarily have to click through to drive returns.?
The company probably boosted overall advertising growth 49 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, up from a 36 percent increase in the third quarter, the analysts said. Mobile, driven by the growing number of users accessing the service on smartphones and tablets, should make up 27 percent of ad revenue in the quarter, up from 14 percent in the third quarter.
For 2013, Facebook should generate $6.69 billion in sales, up 7 percent from an earlier estimate, and $8.24 billion in 2014, up 7.6 percent from the prior estimate, according to the note.
While mobile is boosting revenue, desktop advertising is also benefiting from new ad tools, including the Facebook Exchange, which helps companies target marketing messages based on users? past Web activities.
Checks with advertising agencies, partners and marketers all ?came back more positive? than expected for the Facebook Exchange service, Ralph Schackart, an analyst at William Blair & Co., wrote today in a note.
?Our channel checks suggest FBX ads are being rapidly adopted and are significantly underpriced, with the potential to increase threefold,? Schackart wrote.
