Exclusive: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Priority Was 'Not Dying' In 'Premium Rush'

Gordon-Levitt talks to MTV News about getting in shape for his role as a bike messenger thrown into an 'extreme scenario.'

Few actors can claim to have a 2012 quite as full of big movies as Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The 31-year-old actor isn't just reteaming with his "Inception" director, Christopher Nolan, for "The Dark Knight Rises," but he's also starring in one of the most talked-about releases of the year, "Looper," and preparing his directorial debut, "Don Jon's Addiction."

On top of all that, this summer he'll headline "Premium Rush," an action film about a bike messenger caught up in a conspiracy.

MTV News spoke with Gordon-Levitt about learning to bike like a pro, acting opposite Michael Shannon and trying not to die in the process.

MTV News: A bike messenger isn't exactly your typical action hero. What was your reaction when you first heard the concept?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: I just think it's kind of a brilliant idea. It's a summer popcorn action movie. Instead of glorifying cars and gun, it glorifies bicycles. I think that's great.

MTV News: It's kind of refreshingly lo-fi.

Gordon-Levitt: I think that makes the action, in a way, a lot more exciting. There's no computer-generated action in this movie. It's all guys that actually performed these things. I had four doubles in this movie. Every day, I rode all day, but there are four other guys who are good at different things. One of them is an actual bike messenger; he rides really fast in traffic. One of them is really good at riding a trial bike, a different sort of bike, which is good for jumping and stuff. Another guy does tricks but on a fixed gear bike. Another guy's an actual Hollywood stunt man, so he's getting hit by cars. Honestly, when an audience sees a real human being doing things, it's just more exciting than computer-generated, what amounts to a cartoon.

MTV News: How realistic is the biking in this movie?

Gordon-Levitt: It's pretty realistic. It's definitely a fun action popcorn movie, so you know, it's a guy in an extreme scenario. It's not like a slice of life, everyday thing. It's a movie like "Speed" or "Die Hard," where a guy ends up in an extreme situation and has to deal with it. I'm on the bike most of the time. It is a movie that takes place a lot on a bike, of course, not the entire time. It all takes place in one day, and it's a chase movie.

MTV News: How long did you train to get yourself into bike-messenger shape?

Gordon-Levitt: I trained every day for a couple months leading up to this movie. I rode hard every day and all day. That will take it out of you. You have to be in the proper condition to do that kind of thing. I was definitely in really good shape when we were shooting. You can't get to be like what these guys do in a short amount of time. The guys who doubled me, they rode bikes their whole lives and are some of the best in the world. I wasn't doing any crazy tricks or anything like that. That's what the doubles were doing, but I definitely was riding a lot, riding through traffic, riding with cars, riding fast and doing scenes at the same time, performing dialogue and stuff. Those were definitely my favorite scenes to do. The cool thing was that we actually shot it. They would put a camera on the back of a motorcycle and go down the street, and I would ride and perform a whole scene on the phone, riding through traffic. That's a really fun way to do a scene.

MTV News: Where are your priorities when you're acting in a scene like that?

Gordon-Levitt: The priority is not dying. You can do another take and get the scene right, but then it's just about rehearsing enough. Doing line, that's something I'm good at. I can do that easy. It actually makes it more fun, makes the lines come to life more, to put them on a bike like that.

MTV News: Similarly, having Michael Shannon as the villain has to make that character easier to fear.

Gordon-Levitt: Man, that guy! I think he's one of the best going, honestly. When I found out that he was going to play the villain, I was like, "Oh, wow. Now this is a movie." To be perfectly frank, he is by far my favorite part of the movie. Honestly, he is so good. It's definitely worth seeing "Premium Rush" just to see Michael Shannon play this villainous New York cop in an action movie. It's f---ing great.

ASUS still hasn't clued us in how it'll have us experiencing "infinity," but it is letting some of its other plans for Milano Design Week slip -- namely its N56, N76, N46 and K55 notebooks. Notebook Italia gave the rigs a quick pre-show rundown. The new machines in the N-series lineup are reported to ship with 8GB of DDR3 1333 MHz RAM, up to 1TB HDD space, a Blu-ray or DVD combo drive and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 635m GPU, all driven by various Sandy Bridge CPUs, depending on the model. The K55 mirrors this almost exactly, save for the substitution of a GeForce GT 630m. Notebook Italia says that while these machines are currently slated to launch with Intel's current architecture, Ivy Bridge variants should crop up soon after the CPU hits the market. Khloe & Lamar Recap: Babies on the Brain

This week on Khloe & Lamar, Odom continued struggling to Dallas, while the topic of kids kame up ... surely without any prompting from the producers.

String theory weighs in on Higgs
ATLANTA ? Physicists working on big experiments at particle colliders aren?t the only ones who have something to say about the mass of the elusive Higgs boson. A theorist has now thrown his hat into the ring. Theoretical physicist Gordon Kane of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor reported April 1 that he and colleagues have calculated the mass of the Higgs from the principles of string theory, with no additional inputs. In the standard model of particle physics, the Higgs boson is required for other particles to have mass. Kane?s team, which also reported the calculation online last December at arXiv.org, put the mass at between 105 billion and 129 billion electron volts. The proposed mass is consistent with hints of a Higgs at around 125 billion electron volts, reported later that same month by both the Atlas and CMS teams at the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva. ?This is the first string theory prediction for the mass of the Higgs ? ever,? Kane said.

Newborn pulsars may explain iron-rich rays
ATLANTA ? Newly born pulsars might explain a weighty cosmic ray puzzle. Iron nuclei emitted from these dense spinning stellar cores left behind by supernova explosions could account for the unexpected composition of the highest-energy cosmic rays, Ke Fang of the University of Chicago reported April 2. Scientists had thought these speedy cosmic particles were primarily protons. But observations in recent years at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina have revealed a surprising abundance of much heavier iron nuclei among the rays (SN: 7/18/09, p. 8). Simulations by Fang and her team suggest that young pulsars could emit iron nuclei capable of escaping through the supernova?s expanding envelope of matter that would block protons. Fewer than 0.01 percent of young pulsars outside the galaxy could emit enough iron nuclei to explain the Auger observations, Fang reported. The results are also described in a paper online at arXiv.org.

Mysterious neutron couplings
ATLANTA ? A beryllium nucleus packed with 12 neutrons instead of the usual four has been spotted emitting two coupled neutrons, the first time such a neutron pair has been seen leaving a nucleus. The finding, by researchers from the MoNA collaboration, was presented March 31 by physicist Artemis Spyrou of Michigan State University in East Lansing. The result offers a new look into the forces that hold protons and neutrons together in atomic nuclei and may help scientists better understand astrophysical phenomena, such as the processes occurring in neutron stars. A paper describing the work also appeared in the March 9 Physical Review Letters.

Report: Google TV coming to Europe in September

Sony is making some more definitive statements on its plans to bring Google TV across to Europe. According to financial paper, Les Échos, Sony France's marketing director said that two devices, a set-top box, priced at €200 ($266) and a Blu-ray player, selling for €300 ($399), will launch in France this September. The paper reports that it could launch across the UK, Spain and Germany at the same time. Sony's Stephane Labrousse added that remotes for the new devices would also include a dedicated Android Market Google Play button to access the Android progenitor's apps and media content. The Japanese manufacturer's own Music Unlimited service will also be baked inside. Phew. There's no word just yet on whether these are the older Intel-based models or the new, possibly cheaper, ARM range set to ship later this year. However, we expect to hear plenty more noise from Sony on its Smart TV intentions over the next few months.
