92% Amour

All Critics (91) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (84) | Rotten (7)

Amour might seem hardly the stuff of entertainment, yet the reason it has been acclaimed isn't mysterious. Confronting death, it studies life, closely and lovingly.

Because of its subject matter, and because of the actors, it's impossible to watch this film without being moved. But a martinet is running the show.

A compassionate, rigorously unsentimental masterwork from a director who doesn't normally truck in emotions like the one named in the title.

This is an unforgettable love story set at the close of day, as tragic and beautiful in its way as "Tristan und Isolde," and a portrait of the impossible beauty and fragility of life that will yield new experiences to every viewer and every viewing.

"Amour" is a perfectly made, tremendously involving film that, nonetheless, is very difficult to watch, particularly if you're past the midpoint in your life.

Intimate, admirable and elegant, it's, nevertheless, demanding, deliberate and depressing - about facing our own mortality.

A film so honest in dealing with end-of-life issues that its purity is a positive rebuke to all the maudlin movies on the subject.

Gains its power from grounding its characters' pain in something humanistic.

Profoundly moving, unflinchingly honest and tender with brave, emotionally raw performances by Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.

Mundanely horrifying and extremely powerful.

The story behind the central tableau ... starts off completely mundane, shifts into a tale of pain and sadness, and ends on a note of horror mixed with tortured understanding.

If Haneke has any real interest in keeping art cinema alive, he should take some notes from the Queensbridge rapper Nas.

I am glad I saw it -- and hope I never see it again.

A burden that children should never have to bear - World Vision Blog

An eight year old Syrian refugee child named Layla[1] shares, ?I saw my cousin dying in front of me, so I always see this scene in front of my eyes.?

As children all over North America happily rummage through the cheerful remains of Christmas Day?s joys?festive gift wrap strewn about, the latest version of Halo blaring from 40 inch television screens?the existence of Syrian children presently seeking refuge in Lebanon is one far less carefree.? In this season of joy, it?s difficult to fathom that at least 66,000 children like Layla are coping with the loss of home and childhood as their families struggle to survive the displacement of war and onset of a cold, snowy winter in Lebanon?s Bekaa Valley.

*????? *?????? *

Over the past three months, Syrian refugees have poured across Lebanon?s borders at an exponentially increasing rate.? UNHCR reports that 154,387[2] Syrian refugees are currently residing in Lebanon.? Nearly 75 percent of these refugees are women and children; children who should be focused on homework and playing are instead grappling with educational upheaval, a lack of stability and anxiety and exposure as they face uncertain futures and adapt to life in a foreign country whose host communities do not fully accept them.[3]

In short, Syrian refugee children are bearing burdens no child anywhere should ever have to carry.

Unfortunately, experiences like Layla?s are not uncommon. ?In Robbed of Childhood, Running from War, a newly released World Vision report, World Vision found many children willing to share openly and ?at length about violence, death and the politics of war.?

In the report, which surveys 100 Syrian children aged 7-13 in the Central and Western Bekaa region of Lebanon, children spoke with World Vision staff ?about images of their homes and schools burning, people getting shot and tanks roving their neighborhoods. Even indirect exposure to violence such as images of dead bodies on the news, continues to haunt them.?

A burden that children should never have to bear | World Vision Blog

Wael, showing a book he brought with him from Syria. It is his most precious procession away from his real home. It is his geography book. He flips through its pages every now and then and dreams that one day he will return with it to his home to finish his education.

One child told World Vision:

?My three brothers died in Syria.? They were younger than me. They shot my brothers when they were playing with their friends on the street.?

The experiences of these children make one?s heart heavy?even as someone who has worked with survivors of humanitarian crises around the world, I cannot imagine a world in which my very young son, who should freely enjoy an existence crashing dump trucks around our living room, bearing the devastation and politics of war.? But children who have fled Syria are doing just that.?

?My brother is 13 and used to go to school in Syria. Here he works with steel.?

?My sister, 15, used to go to school but here she works at a laundry shop.?

Like many displaced children in humanitarian crises throughout the world, Syrian refugee children in Lebanon are sometimes forced to choose work over school. ?The reasons for this are many, including challenges with enrollment, language barriers (while Syrian children are taught in Arabic, the Lebanese system includes English and French) and the economic pressures facing refugee families. ?I cannot imagine a world in which my son has to opt of middle school to support our family?s financial needs.? But this is the reality facing Syrian refugee children every day.

In the midst of holiday festivities, after Christmas sales and time with dear family and friends, consider coming alongside Syrian refugee children in Lebanon to help them shoulder burdens children should never bear.? Now that?s a world worth imagining.

Elizabeth Ranade-Janis is the Program Management Officer for the World Vision Humanitarian & Emergency Affairs Team

Make a donation to the Syrian refugee crisis. The number of refugees fleeing conflict-ridden Syria has tripled in the last three months, according to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency. More than 100,000 registered Syrian refugees are in Lebanon, where World Vision has been providing basic hygiene kits and food vouchers to help them survive. Your gift will help continue this urgent response.

[1] At the request of parents, the names of all children have been changed to protect identities.

[2] Note that this number represents only the Syrian refugees who feel it is safe to official register with UNHCR; there are many others believed to be living in Lebanon.

How Secure Socket Layers Safeguards Businesses | SEO Desk

Every possible angle of internet indemnity businesses seek is usually based off data integrity, and where most dollars seem to flock towards.? One facet many businesses of medium size tend to forego, however, is the need of secure communication between customers and web servers, especially during the final sales page.? The standard for such security is measured with secure sockets layer technology, an ingenious method of taking packets of information and sending them between customer and server in various hexadecimal formats so hackers cannot make out what information is being traded. To enlighten the layman, we?ll delve into the world of SSL and TLS, the two syncopated security protocols which speak fluently between browser and server to enhance the total buying, or simple browsing, experience.

What SSL Is

From technical standpoints, secure sockets layer is simply taking personal information, such as credit cards, social security numbers and other pieces of sensitive data, and encrypting them using layers of hexadecimal coding which only the receiving web server can unencrypt and identify.? Generally speaking, the higher numbers of bits which are available for SSL keys, the more layers of encryption are offered.? All browsers have adopted SSL technology, especially for any transactions across multiple sites which tend to pass through several servers simultaneously.? Customers identify SSL indemnification through a small padlock either in browser bar or in lower portion of browser window, depending on which version of IE or Firefox is being used.? One major goal of these certificates, of course, is controlling further reputation damages which occur when buying experiences go south.

SSL software, or ?keys?, are already written into every major browser.? When businesses purchase hosting services and know they?ll transact using in-house payment processing services, SSL certificates will be installed on the receiving server, too, which makes hijacking information nearly impossible unless your computer has been compromised via internet connection.? Several companies which people tend to use for trusted secure sockets layer certificate keys include:

  • Starfield Technologies
  • GeoTrust
  • VeriSign
  • GoDaddy (sells their Turbo SSL which is actually issued by Starfield)
  • Thawte
  • Comodo

Common SSL Technical Terms

As with any programming schema or technical aspect of our internet life, those who work to secure our connections, test SSL and program servers to require secure access to webpages have specific verbiage which is commonly spoken amongst techies.? Some of these SSL-related terms are below:

  • Internet Information Services (IIS) ? The general web services module which supports the secure protocols of servers, i.e. HTTPS, FTPS, SMTP, IMAP.? By default, installations of Windows on servers and local computers do not have IIS turned on.
  • Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) ? When SSL has been enabled on receiving websites? servers, HTTPS is automatically turned on.? HTTPS is not a separate protocol by itself.
  • Certificate Authorities (CA) ? The actual entity responsible for issuing encrypted keys for servers and website security usage.? Generally called ?trusted 3rd parties? on many business sites, these companies guaranty the business and consumer usually through identification of company name on SSL certificate.
  • Public ?Key Infrastructure (PKI) ? The basic set of governing principles of SSL-issuing authorities which have the ability to revoke, store and issue digital certificates.
  • Validation Authority (VA) ? A third party to PKI authorities which basically validate the certificate as authentic, sometimes used in place of CA.
  • Central Directory (CD) ? Place where keys can be stored and indexed which is always secure.

How SSL Protects Businesses

The actual protection of business interests comes, realistically, in the form of protecting customers.? Since multiple layers of encrypted information will protect your business from having payments lifted during checkout processes, customers can avoid unnecessary legal action against you should their credit card information become compromised during the payment process, or while stored on your servers.? SSL also protects businesses from fraudulent transactions to some degree, especially when using third-party payment processing software in your shopping cart.? This is done through AVS, or address verification system, which can generally match your customers? credit card address with their current IP to assure they?re within safe parameters ? if you live in Sacramento, for example, the likelihood you?d want new electronics shipped to Nairobi, Kenya is pretty rare and will raise fraud flags.

All told, without the lockdown security that SSL certificates provide, you?d probably have no business transactions occurring online, nor would customers ever trust spending money online with you.

Installing Secure Sockets Layer On Your Own

Simply identified as a text file which communicates between end users? browsers and your server, installation of SSL onto your own web server really depends on which platform is being used; although literally hundreds of server OS?s are available, we?ll cover the major players: Tomcat, Microsoft Exchange Server and Apache.? Apache, MES and Tomcat will have separate instructions for each one.? We?ve briefly described below the steps for setting up your SSL on multiple server platforms since the general idea is the same.

1.?????? Download Your SSL Certificate From Provider

Your secure certificate will usually contain your domain name and have some form of extension, depending on the provider.? The key will be a text file and usually will be: domain.extension or something like that. You will only receive access to your certificate after providing CSR, or certificate signing request, from your server provider.

2.?????? Locate Instructions For Your Server

Various servers will have different methods of installation; since an article relevant to the several dozen possible configurations wouldn?t prove fruitful, here are some places where instructions exist per server:

Literally hundreds of resources are available to assist you ? even your ISP would have proper technical documentations which would assist in setting your SSL properly.

3.?????? Testing

Once you?ve managed to setup all files, tweak your server to handle secure requests and have your shopping cart matching the certificate file, it?s time for testing.? The best means for testing is either find different IP to reach your site from, or simply ask friends from abroad to access your site.? Perhaps setup mock debit cards to check how each page responds.? Whichever method works for you best, make darn sure you try some method before your customer lands on unsecured areas intended to be SSL-enabled. Should your tests pass with flying colors, you?ll need no further instructions; if any connection failures occur or pages aren?t secure, make sure you tweak the server to include all website areas where you believe secure information needs SSL technology.

Conclusion

Secure sockets layers are perhaps the saving grace of all internet transactions, and have become the signal of trust when online shoppers have visited your website with intentions of making purchases.? The main proprietary methods of how secure socket layers technology protects business around the world goes back to SSL basics ? making sure every packet of information is encrypted to elude potential hackers.? While many businesses simply use trusted third-party shopping carts for transacting, or even use PayPal, the entire process must still remain secure for the customers to feel totally protected from hacker harms.

?

If you need further information on installation of SSL certificate files onto your web servers or simply want to know the various freelance certifications for obtaining work in SSL fields, the linkage above proved helpful for thousands of businesses like yourself, and should prove useful to you as well.

the hedonista: Food Obsessed.... Moi?

Food bloggers come in all shapes and sizes (and some would say, vast, vast, quantities). But underneath them all is an obsession with food, and I've just discovered it's unnatural.

Recently I ran a trivia night at my place with nine of my nearest and dearest. It came about because it's something we do as a group, just to ensure we get together and knock back a couple of bottles of fizz once a month. For my turn, I'd asked if I could shake it up a bit, and so instead of asking a whole heap of questions about 1980s one-hit-wonders and the capitals of obscure countries, I decided to make mine food and wine themed. So I compiled a list of questions, breaking them into eight rounds of about ten questions each. Let's see how they fared.

Round 1 - picture round. What pasta is that?
Highest score - 6/10. Average: 4/10
Pasta that most of my friends have not heard of: agnolotti, farfalle, pappardelle, orzo, conchiglie.
I had a thin and thick flat pasta in there, and despite accepting pappardelle, fettuccine, linguini or tagliatelle, if they were at least listed according to brevity, none got it right. They fought over question 8, and I finally conceded that Agnolotti could also be called ravioli (it really shouldn't).

Round 2 - Fruit and veggies.
Highest score - 4/10. Average 2.5/10
I have discovered that my friends do not have any idea about potato varieties, what fruit is found in grenadine, what the difference between a herb and a tree is, how to poison someone with a fresh apple, or despite a multiple choice with 3 inane answers, only one of which was a fruit or vegetable, they could not figure out that jack-o-lanterns used to be made out of turnips. They all got The Wiggles lyrics right to "hot potato" however. And the best response? Q 9: What's in vichyssoise? ... A: fishes arse

Round 3 - Dining out.
Highest score - 5/10. Average 4/10
Do they know what napery is? No. What about the glasses different wines should be served in? No, not them either. What about smelly cheeses? No, can't tell the difference between a taleggio and a parmigiano. However, they could remember the jingle of a fast food chain's ad from all the way back in 1974, and tell me exactly what you could find in a Big Mac. Big woop.

Round 4 - Wine.
Highest score - 5/10. Average 2.5/10
Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Now I thought these were pretty easy. What is Spanish sparkling called? Apparently it's "el bubblio". The only wine growing region of NZ they could name was Marlborough, and there was a Waipara Sauvignon Blanc on the table. My husband did however know what TCA was, even if he called it tri-chloro-asinole. Everybody else just put in rude words starting with T, C and A. They didn't know how many Crus or growths you would find in the Medoc (Bordeaux), and couldn't even tell me that doux and demi sec were sweeter than brut when it comes to Champagne.

Round 5 - Guess this wine
Highest score - 3/3. Average - 1.5/3
The only disappointment here was my husband, who poured his wine in a shot glass, and then proudly declared it was Sancerre. I did proffer a more suitable receptacle, which he declined, stating loudly and tapping the side of his nose in Sherlock Holmes fashion "I've had this wine before, I know exactly what it is." He didn't change his answer. It was cheap buttery unwooded chardonnay from South Eastern Australia, not incredibly expensive and pungent Sauvignon Blanc from France.

Round 6 - Spirits and liqueurs
Highest score - 6/10. Average 4/10
What a great improvement here. Yes, they know what 'legs' are in a brandy glass. They could tell me how to make a Pi?a Colada. Only one knew that Frangelico was made with hazelnuts, but nobody had any idea what made the mind trip in Absinthe. When it came to stills, barrels and single malts, everybody utterly fell off the wagon.

Round 7 - Match the drinker to the drink
Highest score - 2/8. Average 1/8
This should have been a process of elimination. Pablo Picasso would definitely need the aid of the green fairy (absinthe) to come up with cubism (most got this). Marilyn Monroe was supposed to have once bathed in 350 bottles of Dom Perignon, and derr, Dean Martin loved Martinis. But no - they thought the Queen of England needed to drink Champagne, leaving Marilyn with the Cosmo, even though it hadn't been invented yet. They gave Madonna a Martini and Dean the Dubonnet, and then even bungled Lara Bingle's H2COCO, despite the fact that most of us are Aussies and she's been pimping it for ages now.

Round 8 - What is this?
Highest score - 3/10. Average - 1.5/10
The only constant was Sopressa, which was correctly confirmed to be a salami. But it seems Chaorce is a vegetable (no -that's Choko), Capon is a chocolate, Ceviche "mmmm... tastes like chicken!", Passito is meat, jaggery is a chilli, and nobody even put an answer for khubz, despite the fact that we all eat them nearly every day. Two out of three knew daikon was a radish, but nobody knew that Cachaca is the spirit used in one of the world's most popular cocktails, the Caipirinha, assuming in fact it is the dance that you perform after you have six of them. Kimchi? Oh, that's Indonesion for "cat on a satay stick" apparently.

By the end of this, my heart had broken, and was dribbling all over the floor like an over-ripe chunk of Chaorce. I thought this would be fun. You know, eating food, drinking wine, talking about food and wine, testing each other, the kind of things I love doing with my food blogger friends. But no, it wasn't at all. My cuisinically challenged friends laughed in mock shame through the fruit and veggie round, and only got very excited when they got to say "two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun", but by the time we got to the spirits, they were groaning, telling me they were too hard. I was embarrassed, wanted to crawl under the table and drink the rest of the Bollinger and gorge on some incredible Salted Caramels someone had brought from Crate and Barrel. Maybe just sob quietly to myself. But we persisted, and by the end, we paid in wine because everyone was drowning their losses in our cellar.

Even my husband, who shares most of my food journeys didn't fare well. At one point, my best Dubai friend looked at me and asked: "Do you know the answers to all these questions, Sarah?", and I do. I only had to google a couple of the celebrity favourite drinks and double check on some barrel sizes for whiskey storage. Oh, and I didn't know what a Capon was until about two weeks ago.

Sometimes its hard to see how people don't get your obsession, and also how they can go through life eating and drinking without knowing the name of things, how they are made, and where they come from. But I guess it's just my personal thing. Luckily I have a big bunch of food-loving friends to share it with in Fooderati Arabia, and now I treasure them more than ever.

The next host of trivia has threatened to make the theme "Middle Eastern Oil Extraction" for next time. Now won't that be exciting...

Cops: Pet rescuer killed by foreclosed homeowner

By Sharon Bernstein, NBCLosAngeles.com

An animal control officer trying to save pets from a foreclosed California home was shot to death by the former owner, authorities said.

The officer had gone to the Sacramento-area home after the resident, Joseph Corey, allegedly called and said he could not care for them because he was being evicted by his bank.

The animal control officer went to the home in the community of Galt on Wednesday.

For more, visit NBCLosAngeles.com

He was accompanied by a representative of the bank that had foreclosed on the home, the Sacramento sheriff?s department said.

Corey, who had been evicted from the home the day before, answered their knock with a shotgun blast through the door, sheriff?s spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos?said in a press release.

The shot hit the animal control officer in the upper body, Ramos said.

The officer, whose name is being withheld while officials notify his family, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Corey held police at bay in a standoff that lasted several hours, Ramos said.

Corey was arrested at about 5 a.m. Thursday, Ramos said.

Selby's Food Corner: Pasta de Waraku - Indonesian Feast with a ...

Pasta de Waraku is one of my favorite places for having fusion Japanese pasta and pizza. I was pretty?intrigued? when I received an invitation from Pasta de Waraku to try their?new special menu - Indonesian Feast with a Twist, which they claimed as a unique twist to Japanese dishes with the richness of Indonesian taste that will tantalize the buds.

Together with some other food bloggers and media, we tried the below dishes:

Appetizer

Korokoro Tofu - Rp. 25.000

Deep Fried Seasoned Tofu

Calamari - Rp. 35.000

Fried Squid Rings

Edamame - Rp. 10.000

Soybean Pods

Pizza

Salmon Pizza with Curry Sauce - Rp. 50.000 (medium), Rp. 65.000 (large)

Thin crust Pasta de Waraku pizza topped with baked salmon in curry sauce sprinkled with slice of chili, cucumber and onion. As usual, I enjoyed the thin crispy crust though I wish the topping could taste richer.

Pasta

?Beef Spaghetti with Rendang Sauce - Rp. 58.000

Not your average beef spaghetti, instead of standard bolognese sauce, they use rendang sauce which is famous known for its richness flavors and also with mince beef and quail eggs. Good thing that the rendang was not as spicy as I expected.

Fried Oxtail ala Java - Rp. 65.000

Spaghetti aglio e olio cooked with Wafu sauce, completed with fried oxtail and red bell pepper. Frankly speaking, I was not really keen to see the red chili paste on the top of this spaghetti aglio e olio.

?Traditional Fried rice with Angus beef - Rp. 65.000

The authentic taste of Indonesian traditional fried rice cooked with salted fish and shrimp paste. For the combination with Japanese dishes , use Angus beef in Teriyaki sauce and also completing with egg on top. The Angus beef was nice. The fried rice was tasty but too spicy because of the chili seeds.

Indonesian Grilled Ribs Spaghetti - Rp. 65.000

Spaghetti Aglio Olio cooked with Wafu sauce, completed with grilled ribs and fried white onion. Also served with 2 types of chili paste: red chili and green chili. If you are a chili lover, you will definitely love this dish but for me, after I ate a spoon of it, my lips and?tongue?felt like they were on fire :(

Strawberry Cheesecake Milkshake - Rp. ?28.000

I need milk to cool down of my lips and?tongue.?

Grilled Chicken Spaghetti- Rp. 58.000

Signature?Spaghetti aglio Olio cooked with Wafu sauce, completed with juicy grilled chicken covered chili paste on top.?I didn't try this one because I still felt the burning sensation on my lips and?tongue :(

Dessert

?Baby Hanito - Rp. 32.000
Juicy Fruits (left)

Banana Crumble (middle)

Candyland (right)
The name "Baby Hanito" really represents the size of it. It's a 6 cubes of honey toast with toppings. For the toppings, I still prefer the ones that are put on those?original Hanito?like Hanito Macha Red Bean and Hanito Earthquake.

All prices are subjected to service charge and PB1 tax.

Current currency: 1 USD = Rp. 9.600

At the end of this food tasting, it was hard for me to enjoy the food because I'm not a chili person. There are so many Indonesian food without chili. Why all these pastas and pizza need to have chili? Does food with chili really represent Indonesian food? I understand a lot of people love chili but there are people and also children who can not tolerate it. I guess it would be wise to add other non chili pasta and pizza with Indonesian twist to the menu.

Cupid Skipped Town: 'The Irony of Fate' | Sound On Sight

The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath

Written by Emil Braginskiy, Eldar Ryazanov

Directed by Eldar Ryazanov

Soviet Union, 1975

As the Holy Grail of Soviet cinema, The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath is responsible every year for religious gatherings of zealous Russians around television sets within a few hours of ringing in the New Year. For close to 40 years, Eldar Ryazanov?s most famous and celebrated film has enjoyed a cherished prestige comparable to that of Frank Capra?s It?s a Wonderful Life. With all of the spirited comedy, coy romance, and poetry typical of a Ryazanov film, The Irony of Fate explores the intrinsic desires and complications of everyday people in an extraordinary situation.

Bumbling Zhenya Lukashin (Andrei Magkov) will gladly tell you, a number of times, of his traditional trip to the banya with his friends on New Year?s Eve. No doubt he will inform you of the trepidations he felt as he bundled up his fianc? before stepping out of his Moscow apartment into the bitter grasp of the evening. What he certainly could not foretell was his drunken displacement into Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, and the resulting encounter of one fateful night?a sleepless nocturne that would shake several lives. The film reflects the budding relationship between hapless Zhenya and the lovely Nadya Shevelyova (Barbara Brylska).

Typical not only of Ryazanov?s work but many Soviet films en bloc, sociopolitical references easily find their way into the script. Were it not for the insufferable monotony of Soviet urbanization and architecture, Zhenya would have never unlocked the door to Nadya?s Leningrad apartment, firmly believing that he was home in Moscow. In its favour, such monologue plays only a fleeting note in the orchestration of the film?s events, with the script instead prioritizing the relationships between the protagonists and, consequently, their significant others. As a result, the lack of brooding and blatant symbolism makes The Irony of Fate entirely welcome to audiences far beyond Russia?s glorious Ryazanov cult.

That is not to say that the film is entirely purged of ideological struggles. Several poignant scenes explore Nadya?s tragic resolve to her comfortable stability with Ippolit (Yuriy Yakovlev) and thus conceding her desire for sensuality and stimulating companionship. Zhenya is torn between the fianc?e waiting for him in his apartment and the gravity of his encounter. An unprecedented New Year?s Eve in Leningrad tolls the bells of possibility, affirming that greatness and true passions are inaccessible to those incapable of the ludicrous. When Nadya proclaims ?We?ve gone a little bit insane?, all the distance and impediments, which were for some quenching moments boldly brushed aside, crumble down like the wretched concrete of faceless buildings in disrepair.

With all of the inherent complexities of conflicted and mature romance, The Irony of Fate ambles along with the simplicity and lightness of child?s play. A cheeky Cupid tosses the dice on protagonists suppressing the suffocation they feel in their respective situations, and idealizes two soul-mates meeting under the most improbable circumstances. She is a school-teacher of literature, he is a doctor. Both share verse through guitar. Both are touched by an unrelenting sensitivity to the subtle and romantic. The complications of their long-standing relationships and engagements are almost trivialized in favour of developing their romance. Does this inadvertently glorify the selfish undercurrents that sweep Nadya and Zhenya into a meandering dance, quarantining them from their existing relationships? Perhaps. This may very well be a question posed by abandoned Galya (Olga Naumenko) and humiliated Ippolit. Without the sympathetic characters and idealism, we are left with a man who ends up in a stranger?s apartment and plays a crucial role in the unmaking of her current relationship.

The crochet of music and poetry that plays an integral role in crafting the character dynamics is a nostalgic treasure for lovers of Soviet cinema. The magical melancholy of Mikhail Tariverdeiev and a sprinkling of poetry by cherished names like Yesenin and Akhmadulina make for a soundtrack that gives voice to unspoken sentiments and even delivers some of the most electrifying instants between Nadya and Zhenya. Tinged with quiet sorrow and longing, the classic melodies are a most graceful addition to a film that otherwise incorporates a fair share of physical comedy and the tongue-in-cheek humour of Zhenya?s ?Aria of a Visitor from Moscow?.

The Irony of Fate never fails to turn sympathetic smiles into the cheek-rupturing grins of diehard dreamers. In the glittering night washed over the soulless landscape of utilitarian Soviet apartment blocks, two stranded romantics find each other and are forced to reconcile their lives on the cusp of the New Year. When the daylight falls on the white-washed facades that spun this wild story, they are left with the concrete of their own realities and decisions to make in their relationships. It is a fool?s game, but even the most implausible romance became entirely possible on New Year?s Eve somewhere over Leningrad and Moscow.

Powerball numbers drawn; jackpot at $325 million

Lottery officials say the winning Powerball jackpot numbers have been drawn, and they are 22-32-37-44-50 and Powerball 34.

The estimated Powerball jackpot was at $325 million, the fourth-largest in the game's history.

Lottery officials have said they're unsure what effect the start of the Christmas shopping season will have on ticket sales, which normally pick up in the days before high-dollar drawings.

Recent Powerball winners include an Iowa couple that won a whopping $202 million on Sept. 26. A week later, a Delaware resident picked all six numbers for a $50 million payday.

Churchill's Cigar: Food Adventures #17: Vintage Wine and Port ...

Father Cigar has recently gotten into the wine auctions over at K&L Wine Merchants- so he put in a bid on a trio of consecutive vintages, won and you know what that meant...

VINTAGE WINE NIGHT!

The Cigar Parentals had run across this particular vintage on an early 1990s visit to the UK where they had stayed in a super-swank hotel near Gatwick. (The Cigar Parentals tend to have more expensive tastes than I do- so when they say it was super-swank, it was undoubtedly SUPER-swank) and they loved the Cos D'Estournel Saint Est?phe so much they kept hunting for it. When it come up on K and L, Father Cigar just couldn't pass it up so he snagged a 1998, 1999 and 2000 for everyone to compare and sample... extensively.

Mother Cigar did her usual thing of producing fantastic food to accompany all this wine- fillet mignon with red white reduction and pomegranate seeds, bread, multi-colored potatoes- but not the veg! The Missus and I snagged fresh produce from the New Bo City Market in Cedar Rapids and Mom roasted them up. They were delicious- in fact all the food was delicious.

While most everyone around the table liked the 1998, the Missus and I didn't. I thought the 1998 tasted a little weird. I'm used the red wines having that earthy, almost metallic bite but the 1998 tasted like- well, put it this way, people described it as 'kerosene' or 'wet wood.' And if you want wines that taste like that, then by all means, go for the 1998. The 1999 didn't have that weird flavor but it felt thinner than the 1998- a little watery, if that's the right word. The 2000 had the best of both, I thought- the body of the 1998 and the lack of weird flavor of the 1999. It was my favorite for the night.

I'm not a super wine snob by any stretch of the imagination but this was a fun night. It was very relaxing to sit around a table, eat some good food and drink some truly excellent wine- my ability to swish a glass around and inhale deeply and detect notes of wet wood or grass clippings might not be up there with this best of them but I do know what I like and I know good wine when I drink it.

There was a post-script to this deliciousness:

Vintage Port... oh yum. I seem to be inheriting Father Cigar's genetic predisposition to scotch and Mother Cigar's love of port. What's port you ask?
Port wine is typically richer, sweeter, heavier, and possesses a higher alcohol content than unfortified wines. This is caused by the addition of distilled grape spirits (aguardente similar to brandy) to fortify the wine and halt fermentation before all the sugar is converted to alcohol and results in a wine that is usually 18 to 20% alcohol.
Leaving aside the Wikipedia definition- it's delicious is what it is. And the older you get the more delicious it becomes... perfect way to end the night.

Brazil to host England in June friendly

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:46 p.m. ET Nov. 23, 2012

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -Brazil will host England in a friendly at the renovated Maracana in June on the eve of the Confederations Cup.

Rio de Janeiro governor Sergio Cabral announced the June 2 game on Friday. The Confederations Cup, involving Brazil as host but not England, starts 13 days later.

England will welcome Brazil in a friendly in February at Wembley.

Maracana, built for the 1950 World Cup, has been undergoing a massive renovation to host the Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics.

Cabral says a game between Brazil and a squad composed of Israeli and Palestinian players will mark the stadium's official reopening. A date has yet to be set.

(AP Photo/Jim Suhr, File)

(AP) ? The Army Corps of Engineers on Friday began reducing the flow from a Missouri River reservoir, a move expected to worsen low-water conditions on the Mississippi River and potentially bring barge traffic to a halt within weeks.

The Missouri flows into the Mississippi around a bend just north of St. Louis. One result of this year's drought, the worst in decades, has been a big drop in water levels on both rivers.

The corps announced earlier this month that it would reduce the outflow from the Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, S.D., to protect the upper Missouri River basin. That drew an outcry from political leaders and businesses downstream, who warned that allowing the Mississippi to drop more could have devastating economic consequences.

Corps spokeswoman Monique Farmer told The Associated Press on Friday that the reduction began as scheduled that morning. By midday, the flow that had started at 37,500 cubic feet per second had been cut to 35,500 cubic feet per second.

Farmer said plans call for a gradual reduction down to 12,000 cubic feet per second by Dec. 11 because of the drought.

"We're hoping Mother Nature brings some snow this winter," she said, "but we've been told to expect low, stable conditions, that it's probably going to remain dry."

The cut in flow comes despite opposition from the governors of Missouri and Illinois and 77 members of Congress whose states sit along the Mississippi River. Scott Holste, a spokesman for Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, said his office never received a reply to a letter Nixon sent Army Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy, asking that the corps delay plans to reduce the Missouri River flow.

The Mississippi is nearing historic lows between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill. Barges are already required to carry lighter loads and the middle of the river could be closed to barge traffic if the water level at St. Louis dips below minus 5 feet. It was at minus 0.45 feet Friday.

A zero river reading at St. Louis was established more than a century ago. It's the point at which people at that time thought the river would never drop below.

The National Weather Service forecast for river levels extends only as far as Dec. 6. It calls for the Mississippi River to get to minus 3.7 feet at St. Louis by then. Businesses that ship on the river and their trade groups expect to get to minus 5 feet by around Dec. 10.

Barges carry 20 percent of the country's coal and more than 60 percent of its grain exports. Other cargo, including petroleum products, lumber, sand, industrial chemicals and fertilizer, also gets shipped along the Mississippi River.

Barge operators and those who ship on the Mississippi have warned that a shutdown would have disastrous economic consequences on those industries, with companies laying off workers if it lasts for any significant amount of time.

River shipping trade groups have even asked President Barack Obama to intervene.

"This is a pending economic emergency," said Ann McCulloch, director of public affairs for the American Waterways Operators.

A message left with the White House on Friday was not returned.

The weather forecast offers little hope with no big storms in sight.

While the drought has eased in the St. Louis area, it persists in the upper Mississippi and upper Missouri river basins, which feed water to the areas below, said Scott Truett, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in St. Louis.

"That means less runoff and hence low water levels," Truett said.

The corps has taken steps to keep the Mississippi open as long as possible, including increasing dredging. It also plans to remove two rock formations in the river in southern Illinois that jut up, potentially scraping the bottoms of barges when water levels are low.

But that work isn't expected until February, although 15 senators and 62 House members in separate letters asked for the rock removal to be expedited.

Corps officials in Omaha say the drought already has hurt recreation along the upper Missouri River areas. The low water has exposed Native American artifacts, leaving them prone to looting, and if it persists into spring, hydropower could be impacted.

Corps officials in Omaha say they are bound by the Missouri River Master Manual to act in the best interest of the Missouri River basin and what happens on the Mississippi is incidental.

Finnish app store startup bets on Android in Asia

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finnish technology startup Blaast on Wednesday opened an Android application store hoping to tap into booming demand for affordable smartphones in Indonesia and other emerging markets.

The 2010-founded Blaast has built a platform to distribute apps to mid-range cellphones, enabling carriers to sell more data packages bundled with free access to applications.

"Android is going to own over 75 percent of smartphone sales in emerging markets," said Blaast Chief Executive Joonas Hjelt.

Blaast said its Android store will launch in Indonesia with No 2 carrier XL Axiata, preinstalled on Sony's new Xperia J smartphone. So far operators in Malaysia and Bangladesh have launched Blaast service for basic cellphones.

Google's Android has become the dominant smartphone platform over the last quarters, controlling around 2/3 of smartphone sales globally. Models costing less than $200 have boosted Android demand, especially in emerging markets.

Spain raises $5 billion as it mulls financial help

(AP) ? Spain easily raised nearly ?3.9 billion ($4.9 billion) as the government mulls whether to tap a financial facility that has been partly designed to ease the financial pressure on the country.

The Treasury sold ?1.71 billion in 3-year bonds on Thursday at an average interest rate of 3.66 percent, unchanged from the last such auction earlier this month.

It sold ?644 million in 5-year bonds at 4.52 percent, less than the 4.68 percent rate seen before.

It also raised ?1.52 billion from the sale of bonds maturing in 2021 at a rate of 5.55 percent.

The sale exceeded the Treasury's targeted maximum of ?3.5 billion and demand averaged twice the amount offered.

The government of recession-wracked Spain says it needs to know the conditions to any application for international help.

Standard Chartered Bank Singapore introduces the Security Token ...

November 21, 2012, 12:44 PM PST

Takeaway: Many people in Singapore rely on more than one banking institution and have to carry around multiple security tokens. Find out how the Security Token Card greatly reduces this hassle.

Image credit: Standard Chartered Bank Singapore

Standard Chartered Bank Singapore earlier this month unveiled the country?s first interactive payment card that offers enhanced security. The Security Token Card is the same size (0.1cm) and weight as a standard credit card.

The Security Token Card comes with an embedded high-contrast LCD display and touch-sensitive buttons. The buttons and LCD display allows for the generation of a One-Time Password (OTP) to use as a second factor when doing online banking.

The Security Token is slated to replace existing two-factor authentication methods such as text message OTP and physical tokens by January 2013. On that front, the technology will make its way into credit cards, debit cards, and ATM cards issued by Standard Chartered Bank Singapore.

The bank says that the Security Token Card?s use will be mandatory for adding third-party payees, transferring funds, or making payments for amounts beyond a predefined threshold, as well as for updating personal particulars including mailing address, contact number, and email address.

The Security Token Card incorporates technology by NagraID Security; you can read detailed technical specifications in this PDF. There is no mention of how long its internal power source can last, though NagraID Security offers up to three years of warranty.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has mandated the use of two-factor authentication for use locally since 2006, and several years ago, extended this mandate to local online credit card purchases.

Many people in Singapore rely on more than one banking institution and have to carry around multiple security tokens. The Security Token Card greatly reduces this hassle by compressing it into the size of a credit card.

Internet banking has gained a mainstream presence in businesses due to its sheer convenience. This increased efficiency can make a world of difference for small and mid-sized enterprises (SME), of which there are 165,000 registered in Singapore. On the flip side, smaller businesses also run a higher risk of being ruined from a single instance of financial fraud compared to larger businesses.

Based on reports of online financial fraud that surfaces from time to time, it is evident that the use of two-factor authentication is yet to be deployed by every financial institution. Therefore, IT departments should be concerned with protecting end-point devices such as PCs and laptops against malware, but also that the finance department is conducting online financial transaction with financial institutions that offer two-factor authentication and sensible security measures that take full advantage of it.

Israeli aircraft hit Hamas bank HQ in Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Israeli aircraft have battered the headquarters of the Gaza Strip bank the territory's Hamas rulers set up to sidestep international sanctions.

Tuesday's strike on the Islamic National Bank in Gaza City is part of a widening Israeli onslaught against the militants and their rocket squads targeting Israel. The offensive is now in its seventh day.

The inside of the bank was destroyed, and a building supply business in the basement was damaged.

The bank's 31-year-old owner, Suleiman Tawil, denounced the strike, saying he is not "involved in politics."

Hamas set up the bank after foreign lenders, afraid of running afoul of international terror financing laws, stopped doing business with the militant-led Gaza government.

The U.S., Israel and others in the West consider Hamas a terror group.

Increase SEO Through Smart Title Selection | StyleMatters Writing ...

Will prospective customers find your page when they're searching the web?Search Engine Copywriting is a vital step in an overall website design. After all, everything a search engine like Google does comes down to content. Writing, advertising and managing SEO-friendly content has been and will always be the ultimate goal of a smart website manager. If you are managing a personal blog, a personal online training program or any such online product, better design your blog post titles intelligently. Here are a few tips that might help build great Search Engine Optimization for your website through the power of your post?s title.?

    Design Smart Titles:

This is extremely important. Smarter, concise post titles tend to appeal to a broader base of online users, who in return relate to them and increase your website?s Search Engine Results Page (SERP). The question here is how to design a smart title for your post that is keyword-rich, understandable and attractive at the same time?

At StyleMatters?we advise that an ideal title should be of maximum 8 words. Consider a title for a post based on fitness; ?How to Reduce Your Waist line in 10 Days? versus ?Weight Loss Tips?. Which one is going to attract you as an online reader? Almost anyone looking for immediate weight loss tips would be interested in clicking on a web page title that promises to deliver in a clear and concise way. ?How to Reduce Your Waistline in 10 Days? is obviously a catchier and a more attractive title than the obscure ?Weight Loss Tips?.

    Google Adwords:

This is a very helpful tool by Google which enables you to search for appropriate and widely searched keywords. A keyword the word or words that are typed in by internet users in search of a given product or service category. The Google AdWords Tool can give you the search statistics of every word based on its geography, monthly and annual usage, and position within a business niche. For example if you are trying to sell out your fitness eBook online, then ?strength vitamins? might be a relevant and widely searched keyword string. You can include the keyword string ?strength vitamins? as the title for your next blog post and attract more online traffic to your eBook website.

    Synchronize Content With Title:

An over-promising blog title that does not deliver useable and relevant content can gain you a onetime click but not a potential customer. Google Search Engine Optimization does not work on baseless blog content. The reason is that the basic algorithm for Google SEO copywriting evaluation is much more than a simple word counter ? it considers the context in which with keywords are used. So, if you use a keyword phrase in your title, make sure to include it in blog text as well. The recommended positioning of a keyword phrase within the post text is in the first and last line of the post. This helps major search engines like Google categorize your content through the meta tags you put on your website.

If you are new to the online business and need professional advice from book development to book editing and a range of extensive content management services, hire the expert, cost effective services of our writers, developers, editors and marketing professionals. You can create, polish or maintain your blog?through our writers and editors who can help you grow your online business with a creative Social Media Strategy by giving you state of the art SEO rich web content.
